The idea

Plan for the later shape.

If you plan to narrow the top of your form, leave enough clay in the upper area for collaring. Stretching that area too thin can make collaring harder. Think about where the clay needs to be for the shape you want.

Two schematic intended forms: an open upper profile and a narrower upper profile, with the upper area highlighted for a later collaring movement
Conceptual silhouettes, not measured results or thickness targets.

A question to take to the wheel

Where should you leave enough clay for the shape you want?

Sketch the shape you want in your own notebook. After your attempt, note what happened and one question to explore next.
